Objectives

To learn to talk about problems.

To learn to give advice.

To learn new words: allow, wrong, guess, deal, look through, big deal, work out…

What should they do?

I have many problems with my study.

I have too much homework.

I have to stay up late to do my homework.

I need to prepare for the test next week.

Look at these problems. Do you think they are serious or not? Write them in the appropriate box.

1. I have to study until really late, so I don’t get enough sleep.

2. I have too much homework so I don’t have any free time to do things I like.

3. My parents don’t allow me to hang out with my friends.

4. I have to take more lessons after school.

5. I got into a fight with my best friend.

Look at the problems in 1a and make conversations.

A: What’s wrong?

B: I’m really tired because I studied until midnight last night.

A: Why don’t you go to sleep earlier this evening?

Why Peter doesn’t like the advice?

a. It’s not easy.

b. I don’t want to wait that long.

c. I don’t want to surprise him.

d. I’m not good at writing letters.

e. I don’t want to talk about it on the phone.

Language points

1. My parents don’t allow me to hang out with my friends.

allow sb. to do sth. “允许某人做某事”。

allow doing sth.

My boss doesn’t allow me to use the

telephone during the working hours.

We don’t allow smoking in public places.

2. Although she’s wrong, it’s not a big deal.

(1)big deal 是英语中的一个固定搭配,表示“重要的事情或是状况”多用于非正式交流,做否定用时,常说 it’s not a big deal. 或it is no big deal.

There’s a soccer game on TV this evening but I don’t have to watch it. It’s not a big deal.

(2) although

Although he was tired, he went on working.

He often helps me with my English although he is quite busy.

although引导的从句不能与but, however连用,但与yet, still连用。

2. Hope things work out.

Don’t worry. Things will work out.

3. They fight a lot, and I don’t really like it.

Although they just got married, they’re fighting almost every day.

My little brothers are always fighting.

As kids, we always fight for toys in the kindergarten, but now we’re pretty good friends.

Homework

Practice with your partner on how to give advice when you have problems, using “Why don’t you….?” Or “Why not….?”

What should you do when you have a fight with your best friend? Ask someone to give you advice.
